JOHANNESBURG – Harmony Gold Mining said on Tuesday that employees at its Kusasalethu mine near Calrtonville had returned to work after two days of unprotected industrial action at the mine.

The wildcat strike by workers started on Friday in response to the dismissal of six employees, all members of Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) branch leadership at the mine. Harmony Gold said the dismissals followed an extensive and lengthy disciplinary process followed by management.

After two days on strike, employees reported to work on Sunday night for the night shift and day shift on Tuesday morning after Harmony approached the Labour Court for an urgent interdict. “For Kusasalethu to be profitable, discipline has to be restored and focus needs to remain on safety and productivity,” Harmony chief executive Peter Steenkamp said.

“We call on all unions’ leadership and employees to accept this shared responsibility.”
